Compost Department

April through November, compost is picked up on the same day as trash. During the months of December through March, residents can call for a special pick-up. Compost consists of leaves and brush. It is preferable for the compost to be stored in bags, but barrels are ok. Paper and household trash or garbage are not allowed.

Yardwaste can be brought to the Compost Facility at the Landfill at no cost to residents, Monday-Friday 8am to 3pm and Saturday, 8am to 11:30am.

Additionally, the Compost Department provides free compost for residents that can be used on lawns or gardens. There are two kinds of compost available:

  1. Biosolids compost created from a combination of the by-product of the treatment plant (sludge) & yard waste.
  2. Mulch created exclusively from yard waste.

Both of these products meet the Rhode Island Department of Health "Rules & Regulations for Lead Poisoning Prevention" requirements for posing no significant environmental lead exposure hazard and is considered to be "lead safe".
